Just back from Italy where spent several weeks going everywhere between Milan and Venice by a serpentine route. Now completely arted out, but not before finding at least two new people who are terrific: the Salimbeni brothers who dis a massive fresco on the Life of St John the Baptist in his church at Urbino; and Benedetto Bonfigli, whose works in the National gallery of Umbria at Perugia are among the loveliest I’ve ever seen. And above all Michelangelo’s Rondadini Pietà in Milan, which I think is the greatest work of art I have ever seen.
